Social Learning Theory
Social learning theory suggests we learn through observing and interacting with others, then imitating their behavior. Albert Bandura's famous Bobo doll experiment shows the link between observation and actions. Children aged 3 to 6 were divided into three groups, a control group with no adult models, and two experiment groups: one with an aggressive adult model and one with a non-aggressive adult model. The aggressive adult models would attack the Bobo doll verbally and physically. The non-aggressive adult models would play with other toys and ignore the Bobo doll completely. Outcomes from this experiment showed children exposed to the aggressive adult model tended to imitate the exact behavior they had observed, when the adult was no longer present.
This research has contributed to our understanding of how important it is for adults to model appropriate behavior for children. |
